About The Project There is a neighborhood in Africa that probably you will never visit. But the aspiring and bright young men and women of Adabraka need your help. They have no community centers, no after school programs, no church programs or any place constructive to go after school and in the evenings. Therefore, to while away their time, most of these future leaders of Africa and, indeed, the world, have begun forming the bad habit of watching old imported TV programs every evening. Studies have shown that too much TV watching results in less study time and increases the possibility of dropping out of school. Lack of education contributes significantly to the never ending cycle of poverty in Africa. In addition, it has been recognized over the years that poverty and lack of education contribute significantly to the constant human tragedy of national and regional conflicts in Africa. It is imperative that this cycle is stopped. The absence of community programs must be rectified by presenting the youth with challenging educational alternatives to the hours of watching TV reruns. A brother and sister, Shiame Okunor and Naa Okunor, determined to break this cycle of poverty, established a Free Community Library in Adabraka, Ghana. It is for the neighborhood young men and women who are the future leaders of their nation. The mission of the libraries is twofold:
This mission will be achieved by organizing educational programs such as reading, tutoring, helping with homework, holding essay contests, teaching creative writing and drama, and holding educational video nights in the Free Community Library. In addition, the library will establish regular field trips by area students who will experience the library to which you are so generously donating. For the non-students, the library hopes to organize community wide reading programs, hold movie nights, provide meeting space and provide a place to read a newspaper free. Last year, the people of Albuquerque responded enthusiastically to the Ghana Free Community Libraries mission and generously contributed over 220 boxes of books. More books and educational materials are needed and funding for postage is also desperately needed. Former President of the University of New Mexico Mr. Louis Caldera, UNM Alumni Mr. & Mrs. Stanley Harrison, Virginia and Marsha Hardeman, Albuquerque, The Links Incorporated, Albuquerque Chapter, National Council of Negro Women, Albuquerque Chapter and many friends and supporters have contributed to the library. Adabraka needs you - help educate these young women and men who will be the future leaders of Africa. Help eradicate poverty by institutionalizing peace, harmony and prosperity using the most effective universal instrument – Education. Brochure (PDF) to be posted soon |
